Purchasing reliable used plant machinery for sale within the global market is only the beginning. Have you considered delivery if you’re based outside of the UK?
WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS FOR DELIVERY?
For any customers looking to get a quote for international delivery, it is important to understand the difference between the various options available.
CFR
CFR stands for Cost and Freight. This is an agreement that means that the seller is responsible for organising shipping of the plant equipment to the destination port. The buyer will then need to sort out customs clearance, destination charges and haulage.
CIF
CIF stands for Cost, Insurance and Freight. Similar to CFR, CIF also includes marine insurance. Here at International Plant Sales, we are responsible as the seller to incorporate a quote for the additional insurance for the purpose of the buyer.
FOB
FOB, also known as Free On Board refers to the buyer being responsible for covering the costs of loading, and transporting the plant equipment to the port. In this case, the seller will have to cover the costs of ocean freight, marine insurance, unloading the machine, and transport to the final destination of the journey.
EX WORKS
This is one of the simplest agreements on offer when buying used construction machinery. This agreement declares that the buyer is fully liable for customs clearance, as well as any damage and insurance costs. They also need to arrange the collection of the plant equipment.
WHAT IS MARINE INSURANCE AND CAN IPS SUPPLY IT?
Marine Insurance is another important part of delivery, and definitely something you should ask about if you’re based overseas. Marine Insurance covers the loss or damage of items that are transferred between the points of origin and the final destination. When it comes to transporting plant equipment it can become very costly if anything were to happen during delivery.
IPS will check import licenses to look over the rules and regulations, depending on the country. As an example, we had to provide a Phytosanitary Certificate to meet the rules and regulations of Mauritius. Full details of this can be found in our previous blog post.

BUYING PLANT EQUIPMENT SHOULD BE EASY
Here at IPS, we speak directly to the shipping agent to negotiate the best time for the machine to be collected from our yard. The sold plant equipment is then taken to the relevant UK Port, ready for delivery.
We take care of all of the final arrangements, to ensure our customers have peace of mind that their construction machinery is in the best hands. During the sale of any used construction machinery, we will do the following:
- Make sure the plant equipment is cleaned to export standards and loaded appropriately.
- Any relevant documents (Collection note/CMR) are produced in house for the driver and our records. The Collection note shows us that the machine has been received by the agent. The CMR is a shipping note which is given to the driver to pass onto the customer. The customer will then supply us with a stamped and signed copy for HMRC for VAT purposes.
- After the machine has left us we send all the necessary documents to the customer via post and email.
- When the machine arrives with the customer we will check to make sure it’s arrived in good condition, and we will request proof of export documents.
