Are you new to the construction industry, or looking to buy used construction machinery but not sure where to start? Then you’re in the right place. Looking at plant equipment can be a daunting task, especially tracked excavators for sale. One of the most common questions we get is regarding the difference between steel tracks and roadliner pads on an excavator. If this isn’t ringing any bells to you then have a read below. We will cover what the best option would be for you depending on the type of construction work you are undertaking, as well as the diverse range of tracked excavators for sale here at International Plant Sales.
WHAT ARE TRACKED EXCAVATORS?
What are tracked excavators we hear you ask? That would be a good start for the newbies of the construction world. Any excavator is an essential addition to any construction site and projects. Tracked excavators can be used for a variety of tasks including, but not limited to:
- Construction projects
- Demolition
- Forestry clearing
- General landscaping projects
- Snow removal
If you are looking at completing any of the above tasks, then a tracked excavator could be for you. Tracked excavators differ from normal excavators due to the roadliner pads, or steel tracks on the machine. Roadliner pads and steel tracks add additional grip and resistance depending on the type of terrain the machinery is operating on.
WHAT ARE STEEL TRACKS, AND WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE THESE?
Firstly, it would be important to highlight what steel tracks are and how you can benefit from them. Steel tracks are made using the highest quality steel. They are fitted to a tracked excavator and work on a looped cycle. The benefits of using tracked excavators with steel tracks, will allow the operator to manoeuvre safely, and successfully across uneven surfaces and areas containing gravel, dirt and other loose ground. As steel tracks are made of a heavy material, they provide more traction and stability on these particular surfaces.
For any harsh ground surfaces, steel tracks are the go to tracks to use!
WHAT ARE ROADLINER PADS, AND WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE THESE?
Roadliner pads are essentially rubber pads that are bolted onto the tracks, to promote the protection and longevity of the track. They are used on tracked excavators as they are made of lighter material, therefore ensuring the ground is left intact, and undamaged. Roadliner pads are often used in the later stages of a construction project or even on the roadside for this particular reason.
Another advantage of using roadliner pads is they increase the comfort for the excavator operator. Steel tracks can be incredibly loud, varying on the type of terrain, whereas rubber pads are more subtle. They can also be very uncomfortable to operate as steel tracks are more rigged in comparison to the smoothness of the roadliner pads.
STILL NOT SURE WHAT TYPE OF TRACKS TO USE?
It will depend entirely on the type of work you are hoping to complete using the excavator, but if you’re still unsure there’s a few more points that you may wish to consider before purchasing any used construction machinery:
- Steel tracks are generally more expensive to manufacture for tracked excavators
- Rubber roadliner pads are used by the majority of construction companies, and various tracks are publicly available
- Roadliner pads cost considerably less to maintain
- Steel tracks are great in all weather conditions
- If you require tracks to be removed easily, steel tracks can be changed by just one person
- Although roadliner pads cost less to maintain, steel tracks tend to last twice the amount of time, so replacement costs will not be as high
Here at International Plant Sales we stock a range of both roadliner pads, and steel tracked excavators for sale as we know one option doesn’t necessarily fit all.
