Things To Know Before You Buy A Telehandler

a telehandler

Are you looking to buy a telehandler? This blog will provide you with a simple guide to everything you need to know before buying one of these great machines.

WHAT IS A TELEHANDLER USED FOR?

Telehandlers are essentially telescopic fork trucks, they’re commonly used in construction and agriculture. Thanks to their telescopic cylinders, these machines become more cranelike than a standard forklift. With the ability to extend its boom, telehandlers are able to perform tasks that would otherwise require multiple pieces of equipment. Like forklifts however, telehandlers are also primarily used for lifting and placing. Although the vast array of attachments available for telehandlers make them much more versatile.

HOW TO SAFELY OPERATE A TELEHANDLER

Before you buy a telehandler, you should definitely know how to operate it safely, or at least have staff who are qualified to do so. Telehandlers are typically quite easy to use once you have been properly trained. If you are looking to gain your telehandler operator certification, we would always recommend completing this with a reputable training centre. Such as the Diggerland Plant Training School, who offer a range of NPORS accredited telehandler courses and so much more.

ATTACHMENTS FOR TELEHANDLERS

When you buy a telehandler, it will most likely come with forks as an attachment. Although, there is a huge range of attachments out there for telehandlers, which will open up more opportunities to use your machine for different tasks. So before you purchase a telehandler, think about the types of jobs you need it for and what kind of attachments would benefit you.

For example, if you need to move big loads of loose material or livestock feed, a bucket attachment would be useful to have. Perhaps you’re working on a housing development and could benefit from a roof truss jib attachment? The possibilities are endless and with the help of a company such as Masterhitch Europe Ltd, you’ll be able to get a bespoke product made to do exactly what you need it to.

RELIABLE TELEHANDLER MANUFACTURERS

When looking to buy a telehandler, make sure you’ve done your research on which brand and model would suit your needs best. You’ll want to make sure you’re choosing a machine made by a reputable manufacturer and that parts are easy to get hold of should you need to make any repairs in the future.

At International Plant Sales, we stock various models and sizes of used JCB and Manitou telehandlers. We’ve found machines by both of these manufacturers to be of high quality and extremely reliable. We wouldn’t keep stocking them if we didn’t think they were worth it.

THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR WHEN YOU BUY A TELEHANDLER

When buying used machinery we would always recommend looking to buy from a reputable dealer. This way, you’ll more likely be able to get support should anything go wrong during the process than if you’re buying from an unknown private seller. An established second hand machinery seller should also be able to provide you with all the correct and necessary information for your machine, as well as being able to help with arranging shipping.

As for the machine itself, if possible try to view the machine in person before committing to the sale. This way you’ll be able to physically look around the telehandler and make sure there’s no signs of wear or damage that hasn’t already been mentioned. You should also get the chance to see the machine running, ensuring the engine and all parts are working as they should be.
