Buying Used Plant Equipment? What Should You Consider When It Comes To Shipping

loading plant equipment

Selecting which types of used plant equipment needed is always a hard task, but then organising shipping can be another huge task in itself. If you are based overseas or outside the EU, worldwide shipping can cost a hefty amount of money, if you haven’t fully considered all of your options. Find out which types of shipping agreements are currently available, as well as how the team at International Plant Sales can help you.

DIFFERENT OPTIONS FOR TRANSPORTING USED PLANT EQUIPMENT

If you’re thinking about buying used plant equipment from us, or any plant dealer, it is always best to understand the different options available.

CFR

This type of transport is an agreement that requires the seller to organise shipping of the used plant equipment to the destination port. The buyer will then be responsible for sorting out customs clearance, destination charges and haulage. CFR stands for Cost and Freight.

FOB

FOB is also commonly known as Free On Board. This type of shipping will mean that the buyer is responsible for funding any costs relating to loading, and transporting the plant equipment to the port. In this instance, the seller will also have to cover the costs of ocean freight, marine insurance, unloading the machine, and transport to the final destination.

CIF

CIF stands for Cost, Insurance and Freight. This form of shipping agreement is similar to CFR. However, the buyer will also be entitled to marine insurance. Here at International Plant Sales, we are responsible as the seller to incorporate a quote for the additional insurance for the purpose of the buyer.

EX WORKS

This is one of the simplest and most common agreements on offer for anyone buying used plant equipment. This type of shipping will make the buyer completely liable for customs clearance. The buyer will also need to cover any damage and insurance costs. Additionally, they will also need to arrange how they will collect the used plant equipment.

WHAT HAS CHANGED SINCE THE UK LEFT EUROPE?

The UK left the EU on 31st January 2020 at midnight. Since then, the process of shipping used plant equipment worldwide, has definitely not been straightforward.

As well as a large quantity of additional paperwork, any EU customers will also have to pay their countries import duty & VAT to get the goods released from their customs.

Luckily for our customers, we are industry experts when it comes to international plant sales. We regularly sell and ship machines to the global market, and we are on hand to make sure your transactions run smoothly.

Shipping something as expensive as used plant equipment, we want to provide peace of mind to our customers, that it’s done with care. We work with a pool of carefully selected specialist freight forwarders and shipping companies. Each has many years experience working within the construction and plant industry, moving and shipping used plant equipment all over the world.

OUR IPS WORLDWIDE SHIPPING POLICY

In order for us as a business to be HMRC compliant, customers based in any EU country wishing to buy any of our used plant equipment will need to ensure that one of the two following options apply:

  1. The customer agrees to use & pay for our accredited shippers and we can arrange shipping to the destination country. This will ensure that all export documentation is in order.
  2. If a customer wants to organise their own shipping then they are welcome to. However, the customer will be liable to arrange all required export paperwork. VAT at 20% will also be charged at the point of sale. Once all export documentation has been provided by the customer then the VAT will be refunded. Any self shipping pro-formas must show the VAT element at 20%.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO CONSIDER?

Reviews

If you are choosing to use your own transport company to collect and deliver your used plant equipment we would highly recommend doing your research. Always check for any reviews and previous customers experiences. Find out if someone you know has used a transport supplier, and how satisfied they were with the service.

Size of your machine

Although you may need a 49 tonne digger for your plant, it may cause issues down the line when trying to find your own shipping company. Customers will need to find out if their machine counts as oversized or not. If it is then it will require special permits, and additional costs. There will be less shipping companies willing to supply their services to an individual.

Cost

We would always recommend our customers to get a quote for our preferred shipping companies. If they really want to find their own, then at least they have a price to work from and compare to. We wouldn’t want anyone to get overcharged!
