When it comes to buying used dumper trucks, it is important to establish your requirement first. With a range of dumpers currently available on the market, it is essential you decide which sort would suit your fleet first. Would you prefer a site dumper from a manufacturer such as Thwaites or Terex, or would you require a dumper truck made by Hydrema that would be suitable for more commercial and industrial projects? Find out which dumper would suit you as we look at things to consider when it comes to buying a dumper.
What are site dumpers used for?
Dumper trucks can be used for a variety of reasons, but they are used mainly for the following tasks:
- Transporting large amounts of materials
- Cleaning up on a demolition site
- Diverse tasks on a construction site
- In the mining industry
The type of dumper you buy will depend purely on the type of project you need to complete. A standard one tonne to nine tonne site dumper will generally do most of the above jobs, but the amount of materials it can carry will be hugely decreased. If you were to buy a dumper truck from a well known brand such as Hydrema, the load would be carried at the rear instead. Also, the operator will be able to carry out all of the previously mentioned tasks to a greater level.
When paired up with an excavator with a large bucket attachment, it can easily scoop out of the back of a dump truck without touching the sides, as the width of the skip is much larger than that of a site dumper.
What to look for when buying a site dumper?
Ensure you are buying from a trusted supplier
The very first thing to look into is the seller. It is vital to ensure you have researched into the person or company you are looking to buy a dumper from. It is beneficial to check their website for other machines, if they have one. Alternatively, we would always recommend looking for previous customers’ reviews. Using an established website such as Trustpilot will enable you to gauge an idea of the dealer.
If the company you’re buying used dumpers from has plenty of great reviews, then you can be certain you’re making a good purchase.
Check the history of the dumper
Once you have decided on the type of dumper you need, it is also a great idea to check the history of the dumpers for sale. If you’re buying from a reputable dealer, they are more than likely able to provide a full service history for the machine. Luckily, when you buy a dumper from us, we are able to let you know exactly where the dumper has come from and its history. As we sell on used dumpers and other construction equipment from our sister companies, H.E. SERVICES (Plant Hire) Ltd and Diggerland theme park, we know exactly where and what they have been used for, and by who!
Our sister companies operate on a 3 year policy, whereby new machines are purchased to ensure the latest equipment is available for their customers. When the used machinery is being transferred to us to sell, we will do a 52 point check list to ensure there is no damage, or broken parts etc. From here we would then pass the machine to our repair shop. They will then check over the machine to make sure it is in full working order, and repair or re-spray any broken or dented panels.
Take a close look at key components
Construction equipment may seem to be in working condition upon viewing photos, videos, and even in person. However, we would strongly recommend looking closely at the main parts of the machine, or get someone who knows what they’re looking for.
When looking to buy a dumper we would suggest looking at the following components:
- Signals
- Horn
- Gauges
- Engine – Starting it up and moving the dump truck around will alert the buyer of any issues
- The condition of the interior
- The exterior paintwork
- Hydraulic lift cylinder
For major components we also offer a warranty to cover them should anything happen. Find out more about our warranty cover on our FAQs page.
Body material
If you’re only looking to transport lightweight materials such as sand or dirt, an aluminium body would be ideal as this would decrease the overall weight of the dump truck. However, it will not be ideal for you if you are looking to move heavy, abrasive materials such as rocks or stones. This should be something to consider when you look at dumpers for sale, as it will rapidly decrease the durability and life of the dumper.
