In the latest bid to save the environment, the construction industry has recently joined forces with the transport industry. With over 39 million licenced vehicles in Great Britain, plenty of journeys are made everyday on the roads, meaning the quality of the roads are constantly needing to be maintained.
How does this relate to the construction industry we hear you ask?
Well, a new sustainable road material has been produced with the help of old, reusable vehicle tyres, and building rubble that is often found on a construction site.
What is the new road material?
With a large amount of vehicles being produced every year, this will also increase the amount of times a road is used. It takes a lot of time and money when it comes to maintaining public roads, so it will have to be done frequently with the ever growing number of drivers. With the new road material that has been produced from leftover tyres and building rubble, it has been named the latest innovation to help the environment. Half of the waste produced each year is from construction and demolition sites. There are also around one billion tyres that are wasted and left over each year. Combining both of these materials will not only help the economy, it will also create an environmentally friendly product that will help to maintain the public roads.
Recent figures show that 400 million tonnes of material is used on a typical construction site. 100 million tonnes of waste is then produced. 25 million tonnes of this construction waste is then disposed of at a landfill site. That’s a huge amount of material that could be reused!
Currently, roads are made up of products such as quarried rock and sand, however these are unsustainable materials. Using and recycling various products will reduce the amount of waste ending up at landfill sites. Another benefit of using tyres and building rubble will enable the mix to become more flexible, which will prevent the road from cracking and splitting in certain areas.
Researchers have identified the perfect blend, which is 0.5% finely crumbled rubber and 99.5% of Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA).
How can we help at International Plant Sales?
