1. Check Fluids and Lubricants Regularly
Cold weather can thicken oils and fluids, making your equipment work harder. Always make sure you are using the correct winter-grade engine oil and hydraulic fluids recommended by the manufacturer. Keep antifreeze levels topped up and inspect coolant systems for any signs of leaks or blockages.
2. Keep Batteries Fully Charged
Batteries lose efficiency in low temperatures, so they need extra attention during winter. Check voltage levels regularly, clean any corrosion on terminals and ensure all connections are tight. If your machinery will not be used for a while, consider using a trickle charger to maintain battery health.
3. Inspect Tyres and Tracks
Wet, icy or muddy sites can put extra strain on tyres and tracks. Before each use, check for proper tread depth, wear and correct tyre pressure. For tracked machines, keep the tracks clean and correctly tensioned to prevent wear or slippage.
4. Warm Up Equipment Before Use
Avoid starting work straight away in freezing conditions. Allow the engine to warm up for a few minutes so that oil and hydraulic fluids reach the right viscosity. This helps prevent unnecessary wear on key components and ensures smoother operation throughout the day.
5. Store Machinery Properly
If your equipment will not be used for some time, store it in a dry, sheltered area where possible. If outdoor storage cannot be avoided, cover the machinery with heavy-duty waterproof tarpaulins and check regularly for moisture, rust or ice on exposed parts.
