Used construction equipment for sale can often be snapped up for a fantastic price at most auction sites. However, popular auction sites such as Ritchie Bros and Euro Auctions have witnessed 4 – 5 year old machines being sold for prices very close to the value of new machines.
If you’re looking to buy a mini digger or even a telehandler, then unfortunately you will be expected to meet soaring price demands for these machines. Although the level of manufactured stock is slowly increasing after the backlog of orders, it seems customers and companies cannot get their hands on used digger equipment quick enough!
It seems as though companies selling plant machinery are in a win-win situation. The majority of stock is being sold on for practically the same price it was purchased for, despite being used and a few years old. Unfortunately, the rest of the sector have to either give in to high prices, or simply go without for now!

High demand
During the pandemic, all businesses were forced to close. When the construction industry was finally allowed to open again, it created a huge backlog of customers who had ordered machines. Staffing levels were increased as much as possible to try and complete all orders, however Brexit was then taking a toll on the declining number of international employees working.
Supplier issues
As mentioned in a previous blog post, the construction sector has had to face material shortages as well as delays at the ports. Resulting in machines not being transported out of one of the main factories in China!
Budget after the pandemic
As another recession hits, companies want to budget more carefully in order to cut down their spending. Therefore, the initial demand for used digger equipment was low. With the mix of all the other issues, this has now caused everyone to want machines at the same time!
